How to find 4K HDR content on Netflix and Amazon Prime Video

Netflix and Amazon are always adding 4K HDR content, but it’s not always straightforward to find that High Dynamic Range content. We’ve updated this list to help you keep track of every film, TV series and comedy special to hit the respective services

HDR stands for High Dynamic Range, and it helps films and TV shows take advantage of a wider colour range, greater contrast and brighter highlights for a more eye-popping image.

Not only are HDR-ready TVs everywhere, but video streaming services such as Amazon, Netflix, Rakuten TV, Apple TV Plus and Disney Plus support it with content available in the HDR10, Dolby Vision HDR and HDR10+.

Amazon’s Prime Video supports HDR10+ (though it has a few titles in Dolby Vision), while Netflix backs Dolby Vision camp.

However, it’s not easy to find 4K HDR content. Here’s how to find HDR content on Netflix and Prime Video, and a up-to-date list (as of September) of what’s available.

How to find 4K HDR content on Netflix

There’s a few things that need to be done before you can find 4K HDR content on Netflix.

Firstly, a 4K TV and/or a 4K capable device that supports Netflix is needed. For the best picture quality, these devices need to be compatible with HDR10 and Dolby Vision. Netflix has produced much of its recent content in 4K HDR in Dolby Vision, so you’ll need this to see your favourite movies/shows at their best.

For anyone watching watching on a Blu-ray player, it needs to be connected to a HDMI port that supports HDCP 2.2 or later. Netflix has recommended an internet connection of 25Mbps, with streaming quality set to High in the settings.

You also need access to Netflix’s Ultra HD Premium plan. That’s the gateway to 4K HDR content and it also means be able to watch four screens at once, as well as downloading on four devices.

Once all that’s done, the next step is finding the content. Netflix puts a HDR or Dolby Vision logo next to its HDR titles. Annoyingly there isn’t a dedicated HDR section, but there is a row of Ultra HD content. Not everything that’s 4K is in HDR, but it’ll put you in the right direction.

How to find 4K HDR content on Amazon Prime Video

Amazon beat Netflix to the punch with 4K HDR content, but there’s less HDR content and finding it is even trickier.

This list focuses on content available in Prime Video streaming rather than titles that you can buy. To play 4K HDR, Amazon recommends an internet speed of at least 15Mbps.

Amazon shows an HDR logo next to selected titles on compatible TVs. Amazon Prime Video can stream in both HDR10+ and Dolby Vision, and like Netflix there’s no specific HDR category. There is a row of UHD content on the main page, but you have to scroll down to locate.

In order to find HDR titles you’ll need to search or scroll through content. In a weird quirk of signposting, HDR10 can also be HDR10+ as your TV/app will not differentiate between the two. There’s also a few titles in Dolby Vision.
